R&B legend Jessie Hill wrote the song Ooh Poo Pah Doo in 1960, and this top hit was the inspiration for this bar on 1931 Orleans Avenue in Treme. It features live music most weekends. The house band at Ooh Poo Pah Doo welcomes a wide variety of performers too, and the warm, welcoming vibe honors Hill’s legacy.

2. Chickie Wah Wah

Not many tourists find this chilled out, friendly club. The grown-up vibe, the eclectic line- up, sometimes headed by award winning blues pianist Jon Cleary, and the pop up barbeque restaurant creates a relaxed atmosphere to make Chickie Wah Wah well worth visiting.

3. Tipitina’s

This club was opened in 1977 by a group of young music fans to provide a place for Professor Longhair to perform. Tipitina’s has grown to hold 1000 people with standing room only. It’s a sweaty, intimate and exhilarating place to hear some great music.

4. House of Blues

The House of Blues in the French Quarter is a historic blues house that has a standing room view of the intimate stage. Each stage has Mississippi mud in a box underneath, so that ‘’every artist has the roots and the spirit of the South planted beneath their feet.’’ The place is always packed with blues artists and top names from every genre.

5. Bustout Burlesque

For unique entertainment, visit the most popular burlesque show in the city. National burlesque stars Stormy Gayle, Lola Van Ella and Gogo McGregor perform  regularly, and producer Rick Delaup fine-tunes every detail of the spectacular performance, backed by an excellent live jazz band. Bustout Burlesque performances are typically held at the House of Blues in New Orleans.

6. Yo Mama’s Bar and Grill

Head here on Saturday night for one of the best comedy clubs in New Orleans. ‘’The ‘Usual’ Saturday Night’’ is an unscripted and interactive performance put on by the National Comedy Club. The audience, at Yo Mama’s Bar and Grill delights in the entertainment while eating burgers and drinking some of the 75 varieties of tequila.

7. The Republic

This posh dance club has a unique variety of music, from electronica, R&B, and house DJs. The crystal chandeliers in the cavernous interior lend an air of sophistication to the two dance floors and multiple bars.
